Scooter Tricks 101

There are heaps of different kinds of scooter tricks. Most are just a combination or extension of one or more basic tricks. The basic tricks are:

  • Bunny Hop: ride at a moderate pace, bend your knees, jump up and pull the board firmly against feet by pulling up on the handle bars. Land with your board straight or you’ll stack.
  • Wheelie (or manual): ride at a moderate pace, move your feet to the back of the board. Keep your back foot on the board, lift pressure of your front foot and pull up on your handle bars. Lift the front wheel but keep the back on the ground.
  • Jayhop: do a wheelie then attempt a bunny hop. What you want to do is kinda like a wheelie but both wheels leave the ground. The front wheel should be higher than the back wheel.
  • Stall: Jayhop onto any edge such as a curb, park bench, rail or whatever. Balance as long as you can. Jahop back onto the ground.
  • Front Wheelie (or nose manual): Move your feet to the front of the board. Ride at at moderate pace. Push forward on your bars while pushing down on your front foot. Make sure you don’t face plant.
  • Bar Spin (or X-Up): while doing a wheelie spin your bars 180 degrees.
  • Tail Whip: ride at speed and do a bunny hop. Use your back foot to kick your board so it swings around 360 degrees while you are in the air. Have your knees bent. When your board comes around to the right position, slam down hard.

Once you’ve learned these basic scooter tricks you can start combining them. Some things you can try:

  • One footed wheelie: try doing a wheelie with one foot. It’s harder than you think. Try a front wheelie as well.
  • Grind: with heaps of speed, Bunny Hop and flick your feet out so your board spins 180 degrees. Land on a edge like your doing a stall at speed. Grind as long as you can thenJayhop off.
  • Superman: you’ll need heaps of speed for this one. Use a jump or Bunny Hop off a high place while traveling at speed. Push your board in front of you use the bars to pull it back under your feet just before you land.
  • Indy: get heaps of air. Hold on to the bottom of your board with one hand. Let go just before you land.

As you can see, all scooter tricks are combinations or extensions of the basic tricks. Master them first and there’s nothing stopping you. Personally, Irecon the Jayhop is a great trick to learn. Once you know how to Jayhop you can jump over or on to things so nothing will slow you down.

Keep practising and safe stacking.

Scooter Tricks Safety

scooter-stopScooters have long been thought of as skateboards for people who can’t skate. With the advent of new hardened scooters such as the Razor Kick Scooter or Razor Pro Model, scooters are quickly becoming extreme in their own right. It’s time to take the humble scooter to the next level. With patience, persistence and guts, you could be on the forefront of the next big thing. Scooter tricks are learnt one at a time, perfected, then combined to create new and impressive tricks. As extreme scooterage is a young sport, there is plenty of room for the upcomer to create new scooter tricks in their own right. The following article shares the secrets used by professionals in many extreme fields.

I know it’s not cool but before practicing any new scooter tricks you will need to suit up. Put on protective knee and elbow pads, and a helmet. You will crash. You will hurt yourself. Minimise the pain and wear protective clothing. If you don’t fall, you are not pushing it hard enough. You need to crash to find where the edge is. Also, don’t attempt any new scooter tricks in the wet. Scooter breaks often fail in the rain, so don’t tempt fate. Make sure you have a good scooter that will allow you to trash it. Cheap scooters will break long before you master any new tricks. By the way, all tricks attempted are done so at your own risk. We will not be held responsible if you fall.

All scooter tricks are learnt by practising. You need to practise over and over again. Start at a slow speed, and increase your speed every time you nail the trick. When you launch a trick, make sure you are happy with your speed and approach. Abort if you are not comfortable. Landing is a lot harder. You will need to keep trying until you are comfortable with launching and landing. Keep practising until you are smooth. Smooth motions are perceived as skill. Once you have the launch and land down pat, add it up by introducing a trick in the middle such as a tailwhip or flip. Scooter tricks can also be learnt by watching other people. Check out some videos on Youtube, or head down to your skate park.

There are hundreds of scooter tricks that you can learn. Many skateboard tricks can be attempted on a scooter. Use your imagination. Some common tricks include tailwhips, forward flips, backflips, double flips, rails, ramps, 180’s and many more. As scooters also have handles, some BMX or freestyle motor cross tricks can also be attempted, such as the Superman and Tsunami (you’ll need heaps of speed for that one).

Good luck, and keep practising.
